How the angiodefender works

how-it-works

More people die from cardiovascular disease (CVD) each year than anything else. But fortunately, most of these deaths can be prevented.

By detecting early stage CVD and heart disease before symptoms are present, the AngioDefender™ acts as a first line of defense for patients to maintain heart health and battle atherosclerosis. Its revolutionary, non-invasive design is the first of its kind and can better detect heart issues in a simple, fast and cost-effective way for healthcare providers.

Detecting Early Stage Cardiovascular Disease with Endothelial Function

The AngioDefender measures the health of the endothelium — the single-cell thick interior lining of all blood vessels in the body that plays a critical role in regulating blood flow and the passage of materials into and out of the bloodstream.

Defining an individual’s CVD risk before the development of plaque focuses on detecting the earliest evidence of endothelial dysfunction (EDF). EDF, resulting from the onset of multiple CVD risk factors (e.g., high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, diabetes, etc), initiates a vascular inflammatory process that leads to not only heart disease but a variety of other cardiovascular-related conditions, including peripheral artery disease, diabetic vasculopathy, chronic kidney disease, and vascular dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Measuring Flow-Mediated Dilation

The AngioDefender helps healthcare providers assess endothelial function, by measuring their Flow-Mediated Dilation (FMD). Using a blood pressure cuff that is connected to the device, the cuff inflates and deflates to measure the elasticity of the brachial artery. This measurement helps healthcare providers assess the health of a patient’s endothelium when combined with a sophisticated algorithm, the principles of plesmography and pulse wave analysis.

From there, the patient is given a %FMD score that represents the health of their arteries. With routine visits, patients and healthcare providers can continue to monitor the FMD score after alterations are made to diet, exercise and lifestyle habits to keep track of arterial health and prevent CVD.

The AngioDefender can also help healthcare providers gauge whether high blood pressure or cholesterol medications are improving a patient’s heart health. And when paired with the Vascular Age Calculator, patients have an easy reference point to track and take control of their own cardiovascular health.

Simple, Fast & Cost Effective

Unlike other more expensive and invasive tests, the AngioDefender process takes less than 20 minutes and is mostly automated, so it can be conducted by nearly any healthcare provider. The device is lightweight and inexpensive, making it a cost-effective tool for clinics, wellness facilities, primary care providers and more.

The AngioDefender process can find indicators of early CVD in patients who may exhibit no telltale signs such as high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels. AngioDefender findings have proven to be statistically equivalent to other more expensive, invasive methods of testing. See for yourself how the AngioDefender stacks up against other methods

Care Applications

Because of its accuracy and efficient design, the AngioDefender can be used not only in clinical settings but also for general wellness. Everist Health has completed testing that proves its use in cardiac rehabilitation, rheumatology and commercial wellness programs, along with planning to test its application to aid in the prognosis of vascular dementia, kidney disease and several other conditions linked to endothelial dysfunction.
